Support for a successful start in teaching
Starting out in university teaching brings many new challenges – especially for those teaching for the first time or with little teaching experience. Our mentoring programme offers targeted support in three key areas:
Didactics & methods: How do I structure my course sensibly? Which methods suit my subject and my students? How do I encourage active participation in class?
Working with students: How do I deal with different levels of prior knowledge? How do I create a motivating learning atmosphere? What do I do about unprepared students, conflicts or difficult situations? How do I design fair and transparent assessments?
Personal challenges: How do I overcome stage fright and uncertainty? How do I develop my own teaching style? How do I respond confidently to unexpected situations? How do I get constructive feedback and keep developing?
Organisation
To ensure intensive and individual support, mentoring takes place in small groups of 3 to 8 people. Five meetings of two hours each are planned per semester. A peer teaching observation is recommended in addition, but is not compulsory. To do justice to the variety of questions and challenges, the mentoring groups are supervised by a tandem:
A university teaching specialist contributes didactic expertise, moderates the sessions and provides well-founded input on teaching methods and course design.
An experienced teacher from the subject supports the transfer into concrete teaching practice, contributes subject-specific examples, helps with organisational questions and makes it easier to settle into the subject culture.
Benefits
As a participant you benefit on several levels:
First, the mentoring programme gives you valuable ideas and new perspectives for your own teaching. In regular exchange with experienced mentors you reflect on your didactic approach and develop it further in a focused way. This continuous engagement not only builds teaching competence, it also strengthens your confidence in your own role as a teacher.
Mentoring also creates space for working on concrete challenges from everyday teaching. Difficult situations can be raised openly and analysed together. On this basis, realistic and effective strategies emerge – practical, constructive and collegial.
You become part of a lively community of practice – a network of teaching staff that encourages open exchange, offers collegial support and creates a sense of belonging in academic teaching. At the same time, contacts arise that can be enriching and helpful beyond the programme.
Taking part also earns you 10 work units towards the Certificate in University Teaching of the Bavarian Universities, laying the foundation for well-founded further training in university and academic teaching.
