MSc Biology: (only for teaching degree Gymnasium)

Admission requirements / Application / Enrolment

For teaching degree trainee teachers, the admission requirement is

  • successful completion of the first state examination for the teaching degree Gymnasium in combination with chemistry or physicists (the combination with English is not sufficient),
  • an average grade of 2.5 in the subject-specific examinations (modules in biology and chemistry or physicists),
  • proof of English language skills at level B2.

If the grade of 2.5 is not achieved, an aptitude test must be taken. For information on this examination see - link! (external link, opens in a new window)

If the state examination and the English language certificate cannot be proven at the time of enrolment, enrolment is provisional, subject to the resolutive condition that these are proven by the end of the first semester at the latest.

ATTENTION: Final module examinations can only be taken after final enrolment, i.e. after passing the state examination.

An application is required by the respective deadlines of 15 June (for winter semester) / 15 December (for summer semester).

You can find information on how to apply here! (external link, opens in a new window)

Modules

In the Master's degree programme in Biology, threefocus subjects or two focussubjects and onesecondary subject must be completed, each with one theory module and one practical module as well as threeskills modules.

One secondary subject(Secondary Subject: Chemistry/Physics) and the Communication Skills module can be recognised by courses from the teacher training program (see below).

Two specialisations(Focus Subjects) and the Job and Research Skills modules must then be completed.

You can find a selection of focus subjects here! (external link, opens in a new window)

Attention! Oral final module examinations in the theoretical modules of the two remaining focus subjects can only be taken after final enrolment in the Master's degree programme.

Recognitions from the teaching degree programme:

Recognition in the minor subject Chemistry/Physics

Students who have completed chemistry or physics as a second subject in the teaching degree Gymnasium can choose chemistry or physics as a minor subject in the Master's degree in Biology and have the theoretical and practical module"Chemistry/Physics" recognised by courses from the teacher training program.

Notes

  • If seminars (theoretical module) or laboratory practicals (practical module) have already been completed before enrolment in the Master's programme, successful participation is documented by certificates, which are recorded in Flexnow by the Chair's Office or the Biology Examination Office after enrolment. The laboratory practical course must be graded with a portfolio examination.
  • Courses that are recognised and booked in the Master's in Biology cannot be booked in the "general electives" for the teacher training programme at the same time.

Master thesis

The admission thesis and Master's thesis must be written as two separate pieces of work, i.e. they must not be identical. The admission thesis can be a first interim report of the Master's thesis written after 2.5 months. In this case, the admission thesis must be cited as a source in the Master's thesis. The Master's thesis must be written in English.

An admission thesis submitted as a substitute (e.g. Master's thesis) can be written in German or English. An application to the Ministry is not necessary. The thesis must be newly assessed with full marks by an authorised examiner in the correct subject area. The thesis must comprise at least 10 credit points and have been completed as part of a university degree programme.

As a second assessor is required for the Master's thesis, it is advisable to appoint one before starting the thesis.

After final admission and enrolment in the Master's degree programme, three copies (1 x for the Examinations Office; 1x for the first assessor; 1x for the second assessor) of the Master's thesis (with date of submission) must be submitted to the Biology Examinations Office. The Examination Office forwards the thesis to the first and second assessor.

The application for admission to the Master's thesis can be found on the website of the Examination Office Biology: link! (external link, opens in a new window)

BSc Biology:

Recognition and enrolment in the BSc Biology programme

Students who wish to acquire a Bachelor's degree in Biology in addition to the teaching degree must enrol in the Bachelor's degree in Biology.

Achievements that are identical in the Biology teaching degree can be recognised in the Bachelor's degree in Biology.

The following credits must still be acquired for teaching students in the Gymnasium teaching degree programme (with Chemistry as a second subject):

BIO-BSc-10.2: Lecture Biochemistry B
BIO-BSc-11: Lecture Mathematics
BIO-BSc-12: Lecture Physics
BIO-BSc-13.1: Lecture Biological Physics
BIO-BSc-13.3: Practical course Physics
BIO-BSc-21.4: Design and evaluation: digital image processing, scientific writing
Module BIO-BSc-22: Statistics and Bioinformatics

Students with English or Physics as a second subject must also take courses in Chemistry (see equivalence list).

Procedure for recognition and enrolment

For enrolment, a certificate of placement in a higher semester is required.

Complete the following form for recognition: Equivalence list for a change from teaching degree Biology to Bachelor Biology (external link, opens in a new window) and submit it to the Biology programme coordinator (external link, opens in a new window). The form can be used for all school types in the teaching degree programme.

You will receive a certificate of placement in a higher semester, which you can use to enrol in the Registrar's Office. For every 30 credit points, you will be upgraded by one semester.

Once you have enrolled in the Bachelor of Biology programme, submit the equivalence list to the Biology Examination Office, where the credits will be recorded in Flexnow.

Bachelor's thesis and research laboratory

An admission thesis extended to 16 weeks can be booked as a research laboratory (6 weeks) and bachelor's thesis (10 weeks). The admission thesis and bachelor's thesis must be written as two separate pieces of work. The admission thesis must be cited as a source in the bachelor's thesis. The final thesis must be assessed by the supervisor separately from the admission thesis as a bachelor's thesis.
After enrolment in the Bachelor's Biology programme, you submit the final thesis as a Bachelor's thesis to the Biology Examinations Office.
