The Second World War in the Italian romance - aesthetics and the formation of historical meaning between 1944 and 1955
DFG research project 2004-2007 (project funded in kind)
GEPRIS Project description (external link, opens in a new window)
The project is concerned with the representation and processing of the Second World War in Italian romances from 1944 to 1995 and examines the aesthetic, in particular genre-typological and discursive treatment of the historical events of 1940 to 1945 in fascist and post-fascist Italy and on military fronts. The representation of history will be systematically researched in the areas of "Military campaigns in Europe and Africa", "Anti-fascism, Resistenza and civil war", "The experience of the civilian population" and "Italian Jewish policy and persecution of the Jews", thereby placing it in a close relationship to contemporary historiography. The aim is to determine the specific contribution of novel literature to the formation of historical meaning in Italy in the fifty years following the end of the war, both synchronously and diachronically.
