Teaching at the Chair of German as a Second Language (DaZ) focuses on imparting theoretical and practice-oriented content relating to the acquisition and teaching of German as a second or further language.

Once a year, during the winter semester, the introductory lecture and the associated foundation seminars are offered . These two courses are compulsory for all DaZ students and form the foundation module of the DaZ programme.

Below is a selection of the key topics covered in the various DaZ seminars:

  • continuous language support
  • Literacy
  • acquisition of a second writing system
  • Receptive and productive text skills
  • Transition from nursery to primary school
  • Assessment
  • Minority languages (e.g. Sorbian, Burgenland Croatian)
  • Dealing with heterogeneity and multilingualism in schools
  • Language policy(s)
