Theatre is one of the oldest arts of all and has always occupied philosophers, art theorists and artists of all kinds. On the one hand, its direct contact with the audience places it at the interface between art and society, and on the other hand, its media structure differs fundamentally from that of most other arts: For in contrast to works of fine arts and literature, whose material form remains largely constant despite changing interpretations, theatre is about transforming the written models (score/text) into concrete multimedia-present performances and in this way making the interpretation sensual. The "embodiments" by the actors and singers are only one part of this - stage design and lighting, costumes and props also create new media interactions that make up a production in its entirety. In addition, numerous actors are involved in these translation processes from the abstraction of script-based notation to the sensuality of multimedia - not only the actors/singers, but also the director, stage designer, orchestra and conductor, as well as the stage media used in each case - thus creating a complex network of interactions between all those involved.
The workshop is dedicated to the theory and practice of (music theatre) staging. On the one hand, we will deal with the theory of staging and the performative, as prominently formulated by Erika Fischer-Lichte, among others. On the other hand, one of the most successful young directors of German music theatre, Tobias Kratzer, will present the various multimedia processes of staging from his practice. This will be followed by joint work on a staging concept using the example of Richard Strauss' opera "Elektra" and the play by Hugo von Hofmannsthal on which it is based. In groups or individually, you will work together with Tobias Kratzer on a staging concept, which will then be presented and discussed at the Degree of the workshop.
The workshop also includes a joint visit to a performance of "Elektra" in Herbert Wernicke's production at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich on 13 February 2016.
Tobias Kratzer has staged extremely successful productions at numerous major opera houses in Germany and abroad (in Nuremberg and Weimar, Munich, Karlsruhe and Leipzig as well as in Karlstadt (Sweden) and Graz (Austria). He is one of the shooting stars of musical theatre direction and will direct Tannhäuser at the Bayreuth Festival in 2019.
