The aim of the Bachelor's degree programme is to provide the broadest possible basic scientific education in the core subjects of chemistry (inorganic, organic, physical and analytical chemistry, biochemistry, theoretical chemistry), including the necessary foundations in mathematics and physics. This results in a fixed study programme consisting of 13 compulsory modules. In addition, there are constrained elective courses with a relatively small scope that are not specified in detail. In addition to the lectures, the chemistry degree programme focuses on intensively supervised laboratory practicals at the university, in which the theoretical knowledge acquired is immediately applied.
There are one or more final examinations for each module, which are either written or oral. The modern, module-based examination system emphasises overview knowledge rather than individual examinations. The concluding module in the sixth semester includes the bachelor's thesis as the first academic work, as well as a lecture series held by several members of the teaching staff, which serves as a review of the material learnt and deepens the connections between the chemical sub-disciplines. The concluding module is weighted significantly more heavily in the overall grade than the first-year modules.
