Competent authorities

Various competent authorities are involved in animal experiments, monitoring the legal framework and ensuring compliance with all animal welfare requirements. They review and authorise experimental projects, monitor animal husbandry and are the point of contact for questions regarding import, documentation and supervision.

Trial projects (including ongoing procedures) from the University of Regensburg or the University Hospital Regensburg are processed by the Government of Lower Franconia.

Import licences according to § 11a (4) TierSchG (external link, opens in a new window)

The City of Regensburg is responsible for import licences in accordance with § 11a (4) of the Animal Welfare Act (e.g. mice from non-EU countries).

Import licences for animal by-products (external link, opens in a new window)

The state authority responsible for the destination of the consignment is responsible for import licences for animal by-products (e.g. sample materials of animal origin, media/buffers with animal components (FCS or similar), etc.). For research institutions in Bavaria, this is the Bavarian State Ministry.
