Memory Matters: Non-Human Agents in Memory Studies | 05.-06.02.2026
7th Annual Graduate Workshop of the GS OSES at the University Regensburg in cooperation with the Leibniz ScienceCampus Europe and America in the Modern World.
From witnessing stones and talking rivers to breathing ruins: The 2026 Graduate Workshop Memory Matters: Non-Human Agents in Memory Studies seeks to highlight how materials, objects, geological strata, and the environment function both as archives of (collective) memory and as agents that foster memory practices outside, beyond, and at times against well-established institutions and dominant narratives. The workshop will be held from 05-06 February 2026 at the University of Regensburg and invites applications that explore entanglements between material culture and memory studies.
We welcome research addressing the themes of the workshop in any context from around the world. Contributions featuring East and Southeast Europe, or the Americas, as well as comparative studies, are particularly welcome given the focus of the expertise in Regensburg. The workshop will be held in English.

2. Munich Eastern European Studies Day
The Holocaust and the Second World War in Easter Europe (external link, opens in a new window)
When?
Friday, 27 March 2026, 10:30 am to 4:30 pm
Where?
Main building of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich (Geschwister-Scholl-Platz 1, 80539 Munich)
What?
The Holocaust and the Second World War are the central focal points in German politics of remembrance. The topic is also present in school lessons, both in history and in other subjects. However, it is largely viewed from a German perspective: the focus is primarily on victims and perpetrators from Germany. This is despite the fact that the main theatre of the Holocaust and the war was Eastern, Central Eastern and South Eastern Europe. German occupation rule in the region, questions of collaboration and resistance, the "Holocaust by bullets", East European forced labour in the Reich and other topics are only weakly anchored in collective memory and schools.
The 2nd Munich Eastern European Studies Day aims to provide teachers with information and tools to deal with the Holocaust and the Second World War in the classroom in a differentiated way with regard to the Eastern European dimension. At the same time, the event is also aimed at students and the general public. It follows on from the successful 1st Munich Eastern European Studies Day on Ukraine in April 2025.
Registration for workshops possible until 20 March 2026! (external link, opens in a new window)
