Croatian-Bavarian Higher Education Day from 5-6 June 2025 in Regensburg
The University of Regensburg and BAYHOST organized a Croatian-Bavarian Higher Education Day from 5-6 June 2025. The aim of the event was to provide an overview of the Croatian higher education and science landscape, to present successful collaborations and, above all, to initiate new collaborations. The Higher Education Day was opened by the President of the University of Regensburg, Prof. Dr Udo Hebel, the Vice-Rector for International and Interinstitutional Cooperation at the University of Zagreb, Professor Jurica Pavičić, and the Consul General of the Republic of Croatia in Munich, Vladimir Duvnjak. Over 80 lecturers, researchers and university management from six universities and two research institutions from Croatia and nine universities and four universities of applied sciences from Bavaria as well as from the business sector accepted the invitation to the Croatian-Bavarian Higher Education Day (HED).
The HED included a meeting of university management and a meeting of the International Offices. The university managements exchanged views on Internationalization, Digitalisation, AI, Technology Transfer, Sustainability and Diversity. The International Offices discussed current ERASMUS+ formats (Short-Term Mobility for PhD Students, Blended Intensive Programs) as well as the challenges of management and personnel policy in an International Office.
Cooperation proposals from the humanities, social sciences and economics, artificial intelligence and digital transformation, engineering and technology transfer as well as biotechnology and biomedicine were presented and discussed in various specialist working groups. In addition, contacts for joint projects were established in numerous individual discussions. The HED thus involved several levels that are important for international cooperation and are interlinked. The Bavarian Research Alliance and the DAAD informed the participants about suitable European funding programs in Horizon Europe and Erasmus+ in order to realize their project ideas.
The University of Regensburg was particularly well suited to hosting the Croatian-Bavarian Higher Education Day, as it had entered into a strategic partnership with the University of Zagreb in 2024, which is based directly with the university management and supports joint projects in teaching, research, outreach and campus culture. In 2023, the CROATICUM - Center for Croatian Language and Culture was opened at the University of Regensburg, the only institution of its kind in the German-speaking world to date. Since 2023, the joint Center for German and European Studies with a regional focus on Southeast Europe has also been based at the University of Zagreb.
Following this extremely positive response, BAYHOST would like to continue to support the cooperation with Croatia with subject- and topic-specific follow-up events.

Researchers and students from Bavaria at symposium at the University of Zagreb
Innovation in Chemical Sciences
-this was the motto of the symposium held at the University of Zagreb from 19 to 21 November 2024, which was attended by ten scientists and ten doctoral and Master's students from five Bavarian universities.
The symposium offered a wide range of topics, including catalysis, photochemistry and crystallography, and many of the presentations built a bridge to green chemistry, which contributes to the production of materials from renewable raw materials and less environmentally harmful processes. The researchers and students from Bavaria, Zagreb and also from the Paul Sabatier University in Toulouse exchanged views on their current research topics in lectures and a poster session and identified numerous common interests.
All contributions were compiled in a Book of Abstracts.
The symposium concluded with a round table on future cooperation opportunities and suitable funding programs. Among other things, the researchers are planning a reciprocal exchange of teachers, researchers and students and a joint Blended Intensive Programme (BiP) in Zagreb.
The universities of Zagreb and Regensburg, which conceived and organised the symposium together with BAYHOST, have been linked by a strategic partnership since 2024, under which additional funding for mobility and projects can be used.
