Statement on cooperation with Russia

The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine was a major turning point in the long-standing scientific cooperation between Germany and Russia. The war was condemned by the majority of the German scientific community and, as a result, cooperation with Russia was ended or interrupted.

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research has frozen ongoing and planned research projects and programs with state participation from Russia as well as technology transfers. At the same time, the Ministry has stated that the doors should be kept open for politically threatened scientists and that Russian civil society should be strengthened. The Bavarian universities (external link, opens in a new window) have also strongly condemned the Russian war of aggression and, after consultation with the Bavarian State Government and the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and Art, have decided to suspend all existing research collaborations with Russian and Belarusian scientific institutions with immediate effect, particularly in the field of cutting-edge technologies, until further notice.

KNRTU visits Bavaria 2016

A delegation from Kazan National Research Technological University (KNRTU) visited Bavaria on April 28-29 (April 28-29, 2016). As one of a total of 29 national research universities, KNRTU is one of Russia's leading universities and specializes in chemical engineering.

KNRTU is interested in student exchanges, cooperation in teaching and research, and technology transfer between science and industry. As part of the planned BAYHOST delegation trip to Russia in fall 2016, KNRTU would like to welcome participants from Bavarian universities and colleges.

Bavarian science delegation visits Moscow in 2017

In March 2017, BAYHOST accompanied the Bavarian academic delegation to Moscow. The aim was to strengthen existing partnerships, initiate new collaborations, and sustainably enhance Bavarian-Russian cooperation in research and higher education.

From March 15 to 17, BAYHOST took part in the delegation trip led by Bavaria’s Minister of Science, Dr. Ludwig Spaenle. A central program highlight was the visit to the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR), where funding instruments were presented and opportunities for joint programs with the German Research Foundation (DFG) were discussed. Both sides emphasized the high level of existing cooperation and reaffirmed their interest in further intensifying collaboration.

In addition, the delegation visited several leading Moscow universities. At the National Research University Higher School of Economics, a cooperation agreement was signed with the Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg. At Lomonosov Moscow State University, discussions focused in particular on the promotion of early-career researchers and the development of joint degree programs with double degrees.

Another highlight was the visit to the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech), an innovative research university that combines teaching, research, and technology transfer. Proposals included joint academic symposia, workshops, and summer schools to sustainably deepen cooperation.

The trip underscored the importance of international academic collaboration and identified concrete approaches for the long-term strengthening of Bavarian-Russian partnerships in higher education and research.
