Statement on cooperation with Russia

The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine was a major turning point in the long-standing scientific cooperation between Germany and Russia. The war was condemned by the majority of the German scientific community and, as a result, cooperation with Russia was ended or interrupted.

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research has frozen ongoing and planned research projects and programs with state participation from Russia as well as technology transfers. At the same time, the Ministry has stated that the doors should be kept open for politically threatened scientists and that Russian civil society should be strengthened. The Bavarian universities (external link, opens in a new window) have also strongly condemned the Russian war of aggression and, after consultation with the Bavarian State Government and the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and Art, have decided to suspend all existing research collaborations with Russian and Belarusian scientific institutions with immediate effect, particularly in the field of cutting-edge technologies, until further notice.
