Veranstaltung: Research Colloquium: Norbert Zimmermann “The Cemetery of the Seven Sleepers in Ephesus: Archaeology and Legend"

“Beyond Canon_” Research Colloquium: this week's guest will be Norbert Zimmermann presenting his studies on “The Cemetery of the Seven Sleepers in Ephesus: Archaeology and Legend” at the Centre's seminar room in 3.14.

Abstract: The oldest version of the legend of the Seven Sleepers of Ephesus comes from the Syrian Jacob of Sarug, dating to the late 5th or early 6th century. The Cemetery of the Seven Sleepers in Ephesus, where they were venerated throughout the Byzantine period, does not quite fit the narrative. The lecture introduces the Cemetery and the legend and attempts to clarify the contradictions.
