Genetics

Organising working groups:

Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Seufert

Prof. Dr. Frank Sprenger

Registration

Information about the organization of the module, the times of the lecture and the seminar associated with the module as well as the practical modules, see the latest GRIPS course in the list of Genetics Master module in this list of GRIPS-courses (externer Link, öffnet neues Fenster). Usually, we have more students interested in the practical modules than our capacity allows. Based on the applications (see the info inside the latest GRIPS course), participants for the individual practical modules will be allocated to avaiable time slots. Applications are usually collected at the beginning of the Winteresemester and then being allocated for the time period till September next year.

Theory Module - Genetics

BIO-M-TM-G

Module coordinators: Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Seufert, Prof. Dr. Frank Sprenger

Module contents
  • Current topics in cell proliferation control such as: cell cycle regulation, mitosis, meiosis, signalling, assymetric cell division, mRNA translation.

  • Presentation and discussion of a research based topic from the topics listed above, and elaboration and presentation of methods used in the field of proliferation control.

Lecture: Control of Cell Proliferation (54402; link SPUR (externer Link, öffnet neues Fenster))

and

a lecture in the field of genetics or molecular or cellular biology

(for a selection see SPUR)*

Students starting before the winter semester 26/27: Registration is not required for the lectures. There is no exam to sit. However, the content of the lectures may form part of the oral exam.

Students starting in the winter semester 26/27 or later: Portfolio (collection of exercises and reflective tasks completed alongside the lectures). Please ask the module coordinator about the requirements. Once it has been finalised, the portfolio must be registered in FlexNow.

The portfolio is not graded.

2.Seminar on Current Topics in cell proliferation control (54428, link SPUR (externer Link, öffnet neues Fenster))2

seminar presentation, regular participation

You must register for the seminars. Information on how to register see in SPUR.

Once you have attended a seminar, it must be registered in FlexNow.

The seminar is not graded.

3.30 min oral examination covering the entire module (graded)4

Examiners:

The student can choose one of the examiner.

Please get in contact with the examiner of your choice to arrange a date of the oral examination, than register the examination in FlexNow.

The oral examination is graded (= module grade).

*Note! If you are unsure which lectures and seminars to choose, please contact the module coordinator for advice. Your choice may depend on which examiner you select for the module examination.

Laboratory course (6 weeks): Regulation of Cell Division and mRNA Translation (54424; link SPUR (externer Link, öffnet neues Fenster))

Contact the module coordinator to find a supervisor for the laboratory course.

The date of the laboratory course will then be arranged with the supervisor.

12Portfolio (graded)*

*The portfolio examination contains following:

  • Internship report of 4.000–10.000 words, including a bibliography,
  • scientific presentation (15-30 min),
  • practical scientific work,
  • data, protocols, and records -including electronic data- from scientific work, prepared in accordance with the principles of good scientific practice.

The grade of the portfolio is based on the evaluation of the report, the presentation, and the practical work in the lab. The supervisor of the laboratory course can use a template for the evaluation - Evaluation of a practical module - PDF (externer Link, öffnet neues Fenster).
The completed evaluation should then be given to the student as feedback.

Practical Module - Regulation of Cell Division in Drosophila

BIO-M-PM-CDD

Module coordinator: Prof. Dr. Frank Sprenger

Module contents
  • In a six-week research project the student will work under guidance on a current research topics in the field of cell cycle regulatory processes. He will use, among other things, tissue culture cells (from Drosophila and vertebrates) as well as different developmental stages from Drosophila

  • The student will present and discuss the data obtained in the research project as well as the relevant scientific background in a written report and will present and discuss the results in an oral presentation.
