Application to the Human Genetics module

Registration by 31st of July: Frau Dr. Fabiola Biasella (Fabiola.

Application to the Human Genetics module

Due to the high demand of students to the “Human Genetics” module, a selection process takes place. Please send your application per E-Mail to Fabiola.Biasella@klinik.uni-regensburg.de with the Subject heading: Wahlmodul Humangenetik until July 31 if you want to start the module in the upcoming winter semester. The application should include a short curriculum vitae and a grade transcript. If needed, you will be invited to a short interview. Acceptance to the module will be communicated at the latest at the end of July. We request that you let us know until the end of August if you will take the module or not. Should there be free places left, these will be allotted until mid-September.

Theory Module - Human Genetics

Module contents

Human Genetics I – Lecture “Advanced Human Genetics”

Comprehensive basic information on modern topics of human genetics with a strong focus on genetic variation in health and disease:

  • Organization of the human genome, gene expression and gene regulation.

  • Mendelian diseases: Basics, identification of new genetic causes, functional characterization of novel variants

  • Cancer genetics

  • Genetics of complex diseases (e.g. functionality of genetic polymorphisms, genome wide association studies, pathway analysis), population genetics, epigenetic mechanisms, pharmacogenetics.

  • Medical genetics including basic principles of genetic counseling and diagnostics.

  • Ethical, legal, and social issues related to genetic testing.

  • Principles of gene therapy (including genome editing) and application of induced pluripotent stem cell technology.

Human Genetics II – 2‑week rotation internship

This course provides deeper understanding of the impact of molecular biology and genetics on modern medicine and the connection between basic research, medical knowledge and an improved patient management. The concepts will be accompanied by theoretical introductions followed by a guided experimental course.

Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Principles and specifics of modern DNA diagnostics

  • From raw data to interpretation of genetic variants

  • Cell culture and heterologous gene expression

  • Induced pluripotent stem cell technology

  • CRISPR-Cas mediated genome editing

  • mRNA expression analysis

  • Applications of confocal laser scanning microscopy

  • Use of disease models in human genetics research

Laboratory course (6 weeks): Human Genetics (56130, link SPUR (externer Link, öffnet neues Fenster))

Contact the module coordinator to find a supervisor for the laboratory course.

The date of the laboratory course will then be arranged with the supervisor.

12Portfolio (graded)*

*The portfolio examination contains following:

  • Internship report of 4.000–10.000 words, including a bibliography,
  • scientific presentation (15-30 min),
  • practical scientific work,
  • data, protocols, and records -including electronic data- from scientific work, prepared in accordance with the principles of good scientific practice.

The grade of the portfolio is based on the evaluation of the report, the presentation, and the practical work in the lab. The supervisor of the laboratory course can use a template for the evaluation - Evaluation of a practical module - PDF. (externer Link, öffnet neues Fenster)
The completed evaluation should then be given to the student as feedback.
