The fourth edition of the Bavarian-Hungarian student project on autonomous driving
In 2026, the Bavarian-Hungarian student project on autonomous driving took place for the fourth time. A total of 22 students from Eötvös Loránd University and four Bavarian universities participated in two workshops. The workshops were organized by researchers from Kempten University of Applied Sciences, Munich University of Applied Sciences, and Széchenyi István University in Győr. The participating institutions included Kempten University of Applied Sciences, Munich University of Applied Sciences, Landshut University of Applied Sciences, and Coburg University of Applied Sciences.
Workshops in Kempten
The first part of the project took place on April 16–17 at Kempten University of Applied Sciences. The students visited the testing grounds of Aumovio and explored the infrastructure at the Memmingen/Benningen site. They also gained insights into current research activities at the IFM – Institute for Driver Assistance and Connected Mobility. Topics included vehicle testing, driving simulators, functional safety, cybersecurity, and AI-based perception systems for autonomous driving.
During the workshop “AI Perception Safety and Cybersecurity for Automated Driving,” led by Milin Patel (IFM), the focus was on perception fundamentals, failure modes and diagnostics, safety and cybersecurity analysis, runtime monitoring, and incident data handling.
Another workshop, led by Prof. Dr. Markus Krug from Munich University of Applied Sciences, focused on lane detection technologies.
Practical Training in Győr
The second part of the project took place on May 7–8 at Széchenyi István University Győr. There, the students carried out several hands-on exercises using robotic cars. They also had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with simulation and operating systems such as ROS 2, learn more about the university’s laboratories and research vehicles, and participate in tests involving real robotic cars.
The project is coordinated and supported by BAYHOST and originated within the Bavaria-Hungary government commission initiative. In 2026, the Faculty of Informatics at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) Budapest joined the project as a new partner alongside Széchenyi István University.
Due to the growing interest shown by students each year, the project is expected to continue in the future.
