Aktuelles: Call for Papers: Transnationalising Gender: Azerbaijan’s Cultures and Heritage in Conversation with Others, 22–23 October 2026, Regensburg, Germany

We are excited to announce the Call for Papers for an international conference organised by the Transitions project!

12. März 2026, von Transitions Team

Deadline for submissions: 17 April 2026

This conference seeks to explore the multi-layered, transnational dimensions of Azerbaijan’s cultures and heritage by employing the concepts of gender and sexuality as a primary analytical lens. It places the focus on the contemporary period, i.e., from the 1980s till the present day. This period, roughly beginning with the Soviet-Afghan War and marked by the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the founding of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and Türkiye emerging from dictatorship (among other regional and global events), is pivotal in terms of global political, religious and cultural transformations, and in terms of recalibrations of transnational connections. The conference is part of the UK-German research project ‘Transitions: Examining Changing Regimes of Gender and Sexuality in Post-Soviet Muslim Republics’, funded by AHRC and DFG and co-led by Professors Vlad Strukov (Leeds) and Timothy Nunan (Regensburg) and comprising an international, interdisciplinary team of researchers.

We particularly encourage applications from early career participants across academia, the arts and practice. We will cover accommodation costs for all participants and have limited funding to contribute to travel costs. We encourage applicants who have access to funding at their institutions to provide this information to us in their application so that we can use our funds to accommodate as many participants without such access as possible.

Please click here to see the full CfP in Azerbaijani and English. The conference will be in English. Submit an abstract of 300 words and a short bio of up to 150 words as a single Word file to transitions@uni-regensburg.de by 17 April 2026. Please use the subject line ‘Transnationalising Gender’. Confirmations of acceptance will follow in early May 2026.
