Objectives, content, legal basis and participation requirements

The supplementary studies programme aims to impart gender knowledge and gender competence. By analysing fundamental theories, discourses and political developments in gender studies, students can identify gender relations and discrimination. The acquired gender competences thus enable students to analyse the effects of the category of gender on individuals and society. From this, approaches can be developed to change disadvantageous structures.

Content of the supplementary studies in gender competence

The content is based on the fundamental topics

  • Core module: In the core module, fundamental concepts and basic knowledge of gender studies, political and society backgrounds and developments, issues and theories relating to gender relations are discussed and taught.
  • Advanced module: In the advanced module, the basic knowledge acquired in the core module is deepened by analysing and discussing the formation and shaping of gender relations on the basis of specific problems and issues. The focus here is on analyses, explanations and possibilities for changing gender-specific inequalities. Interdisciplinary programmes enable an interdisciplinary approach.
  • Clarification module: In the specialisation module, theory and application in the field of gender studies are interlinked. Particularly with regard to professional practice, gender competence should contribute to recognising and reflecting on gender-specific inequalities and designing effective conventional and practical countermeasures. At the same time, there is the opportunity for academic specialisation.

Please note that at least one course must be completed at OTH as part of the supplementary studies programme.
