Previous winners of the Gender Equality Award
2019: Faculty of Physics
The Faculty of Physics is one of the laggards when it comes to the presence of women at all academic qualification levels and even more so in the professoriate. However, it is not giving up on making potential young female physicists interested in studying.
Since 2003, the faculty has regularly presented a highly acclaimed exhibition and stage show project "Physics up close" at the Danube Shopping Centre as part of the spring conferences of the German Physical Society. This low-threshold programme gives girls and young women a direct introduction to the joy of physics experiments.
The initiative goes back to the current Dean, Prof Dr Dieter Weiss, was supported by Prof Dr Josef Zweck until 2016 and since then by Prof Dr John Lupton. The fact that Dr Karoline Bernhard-Höfer, a woman, has taken over the management and that 50 per cent of the staff on site are female is extremely important in terms of gender equality, as role modelling ensures that the impression that physicists are a male domain does not arise in the first place. 2017: Faculty of Psychology, Education, and Sport Science
The Faculty of Psychology, Education, and Sport Science under the leadership of Dean Prof. Dr Dr h.c. Hans Gruber and the collaboration of women's representatives Dr Michaela Ingrisch, Dr Helen Jossberger and Dr Eva Pufke, have applied with the concept of a gender-sensitive personnel development measure for female academics from the end of their doctorate. This concept concretises the faculty's equality policy adopted in 2017. Despite the extremely high proportion of women among students (76.9 per cent), doctorates (60 per cent) and professorships (W2: 100 per cent, W3: 42.9 per cent), it found that there is still a significant deficit in the area of habilitations (period 2008 to 2016: 21.4 per cent). The programme, consisting of individual career coaching and special information services, is intended to motivate and encourage highly qualified female doctoral and postdoctoral researchers to take the path to a professorship. 2014: Faculty of Physics
The "MINT-Girls Regensburg (MGR)" (external link, opens in a new window) project under the direction of Dr Stefan Giglberger was awarded the prize. The project is aimed at girls in the 9th, 10th and 11th grades at grammar schools and FOS/BOS. It includes seminars on STEM topics, soft skills such as presentation techniques and a one-week final project on the topic of the "Mars mission", including the opportunity to test Mars robots that they have created and programmed themselves on site at the German Aerospace Centre in Oberpfaffenhofen.
