Since the late 1980s, the Bund-Länder Commission (BLK), later the Joint Science Conference (GWK), has been collecting data on the promotion of women in science and on the proportion of women in universities and non-university research institutions.

Since 2003, the Competence Centre for Women in Science and Research (CEWS) / GESIS - Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences has presented an annual overview of developments at universities in the area of gender equality in the form of the university ranking according to gender equality aspects.
