In the Library Catalog (external link, opens in a new window) the tab „Books & Journals“ contains printed books, e-books and other media held at the University Library of Regensburg and other Bavarian libraries.

There are various possible uses for printed books.

There are also different access options for e-books.

Use filters to narrow down your results.

The filter Online Access "E-media free & licensed" displays all e-media licensed by the University Library and available within the campus network as well as freely accessible e-media.

The filter „E-media free“ displays only e-media that you can use free of charge even when you are not connected to the campus network.

In the Library Catalog (external link, opens in a new window), under the  „Articles & More“ tab, you will find articles from scientific journals and books, among other things.

A separate advanced search is available for „Articles & More“.

It is often useful to search these international databases using English terms.

You can read the text directly online. In some cases, you must be connected to the campus network to read and download it.

Selecting „Results with and without online access“ also displays hits with no attached PDF.

By clicking the button „Request full text“, you can find out whether there are free online offers or further licenses for the hit, whether the journal is also available in the University Library as printed version, or whether the article can be ordered via inter-library loan.

Even though about 300 different databases of various subjects are searched in "Articles & More", it is only a small selection.

For a comprehensive literature search on a topic, you should search databases.

Databases offer special search options and more literature on your subject or topic.
In addition to books, for example, articles from journals and individual contributions from books and anthologies from international sources.

Databases can be found in the Database-Infosystem (external link, opens in a new window) (DBIS).

You can search for a specific database or view databases related to your subject.

For each database, you will receive information on the content and whether the database is available online free of charge or has been licensed by the University Library for the campus network.

IIn DBIS, you select a database. You then research your topic in the database. You cannot research your topic in DBIS itself.

Library Catalog

In the Library Catalog (external link, opens in a new window), the tab „Books & Journals“ contains books, journals and other media held at the University Library of Regensburg as well as the holdings of other Bavarian libraries. By limiting your search to the publication type “journal,” you can filter specifically for journals.

Electronic Journals Library

In the Electronic Journals Library (external link, opens in a new window) (EZB) you will find not only electronic journals licensed by the University Library and listed in the Library Catalog, but also scientific journals that are freely available on the internet or licensed by other libraries.
The journals in the EZB are organized by subject.
The traffic light system shows you immediately whether you can use the journal online free of charge (green), whether you can use the journal free of charge in the campus network (yellow) or whether there is no access to the journal (red).

You can search for journals in the EZB. It is not possible to search for individual Journal articles or by subject!

 

Electronic newspapers

A list of all the electronic  newspapers to which you have access at the University Library of Regensburg can be found on the Database-Infosystem (DBIS) under UBR newspapers (external link, opens in a new window).

You can also find movies the Library Catalog (external link, opens in a new window) under the tab „Books & Journals“ .

By limiting the format to „Video“, you can specifically search for movies.

By narrowing the search to the location "UB Magazin: Filme auf DVD", you can specifically search for DVDs in the holdings of the University Library of Regensburg.

You will find millions of Google results for your topic. Very few of these search results meet scientific standards. Therefore, every Google result should be checked for credibility. Only cite sources which meet the following criteria:

• Currency: up-to-date information
• Reliability: author supports statements with quotations (clear list of sources)
• Authority / Audience: author comes from the scientific community and addresses the scientific community
• Purpose / Point of View: author is primarily interested in the scientific outcome and not in click rates or ad revenues. Text, headings and pictures are factual and serve informational purposes only 

A good alternative is to use search engines that exclusively search scientific sources, e.g. BASE (external link, opens in a new window) andGoogle Scholar (external link, opens in a new window).

BASE

BASE (external link, opens in a new window) (Bielefeld Academic Search Engine) is one of the world's most voluminous search engines especially for academic web resources  –  journals, institutional repositories, digital collections etc. 

The sources were individually checked for scientific accuracy by specialist staff at Bielefeld University Library. You can access the full texts of about 60% of the indexed records for free (Open Access).

Google Scholar

Compared to regular Google, Google Scholar (external link, opens in a new window) indexes predominantly scientific publications and is currently the world's largest academic search engine.

It analyzes websites of academic publishers and professional societies, universities, as well as PowerPoint presentations, books digitized for Google Books, and excerpts from books.

Both freely available documents and paid content are displayed. If you want to see directly next to the hits in Google Scholar whether the University Library of Regensburg offers access to paid content, you can link Google Scholar to the University Library of Regensburg. Licensed content can be accessed within the University of Regensburg network.
