Advantages of using an ORCID
Used correctly, ORCID facilitates publishing, applying for research funding and everyday life.
- ORCID simplifies communication with publishers, research funders and all those involved in science. By providing your ORCID when submitting third-party funding applications and manuscripts, for example, you can easily provide an insight into your academic work to date.
- Your ORCID record contains a publication list with all your works, regardless of when and where they were created. Links to full texts are provided where possible.
- Data synchronisation with the publication server of the University of Regensburg, Crossref, DataCite, Web of Science and Scopus ensures that your ORCID record is constantly updated. Automatic data exchange saves you time and labour and also increases the data quality in the various systems.
- The correct categorisation of your publications enables the correct calculation of your bibliographic parameters such as the h-index. It also makes it easier to document the university's overall research output, on the basis of which the university receives funding. The use of ORCID not only has an impact on you, but also on the University of Regensburg as your employer and your colleagues.
- You retain full control over the information you provide and can customise it at any time. You can find out more about your rights with ORCID in the data protection section.
Use your ORCID throughout the publication process to maximise the benefits of the system. Enter your ORCID
- when contacting publishers (if the ORCID is not requested, you can also write it directly in the manuscript),
- when publishing your research data,
- when contacting research funding organisations,
- at congresses and lecture slides,
- on your website and in your email signature and
- for entries on the publication server of the University of Regensburg.
Setting up an ORCID record
You can set up an ORCID record for yourself quickly, easily and free of charge:
- Register at orcid.org/register with your name and e-mail and set a password.
- Decide on a general visibility setting. You can change this later for each individual field.
- Enter information about your career. Also enter all spellings of your name.
(Of course, you decide what information you want to provide. However, the more information you provide, the more meaningful your record will be) - Link your ORCID to Trusted Organisations, such as the UR publication server, to automatically generate your publication list.
Set up data exchange with Trusted Organisations and the publication server
To avoid having to add your works to your publication list manually, it makes sense to set up automatic data exchange with the publication server of the University of Regensburg, Crossref, DataCite, Web of Science and Scopus. You can also use our instructions for adding UR as a trusted organisation and setting up data exchange with the publication server (external link, opens in a new window).
This will automatically update your ORCID record; the publications will be recognised in various systems and thus gain greater visibility. Once completed, this step saves you work in the long term and at the same time ensures consistent data quality across all systems.
For example, if you publish via a publisher and enter your ORCID there, the metadata for this publication can be added directly to your ORCID record via CrossRef, which is responsible for DOI assignment. A duplicate check is also carried out in ORCID. This means that you do not have to worry about a publication being listed more than once if it is added to your ORCID record from different sources.
Linking a CC account
You can also link your ORCID to your CC account quickly and easily. To do this, log in to the publication server and follow the ORCID (external link, opens in a new window) link in the navigation list on the left. You will see a page with the Connect your ORCID button. By clicking the button and logging in to ORCID, your ORCID will be saved in your CC account.
To be able to edit your ORCID record easily at any time without having to remember the password for ORCID, you can also log in to ORCID with your CC account after adding the UR as a Trusted Organisation. To do this, select Access trough your institution and then the UR. You will then be redirected to the UR's web login service.
Privacy at ORCID
ORCID is a non-profit organisation supported by the scientific community. There is no business behind ORCID interested in your data.
As you maintain your record yourself, you always have full control over what information you provide. You can use a traffic light system to change the visibility settings for each individual piece of information:
- Green = publicly visible for everyone
- Yellow = visible to trusted organisations to which you grant these rights individually, e.g. the publication server of the University of Regensburg
- Red = not publicly visible
Further information on privacy when using ORCID can be found in this legal opinion on ORCID in the context of German data protection guidelines (external link, opens in a new window).
