Creating editions with the UR Publishing Services
Digital technologies have significantly expanded the possibilities of academic editing. However, in the face of constantly evolving software, the question arises as to how the texts, which are often enriched in a variety of ways, can remain permanently legible. In response to this, the Text Encoding Initiative (external link, opens in a new window) (TEI) has developed guidelines for text labelling in xml format, which have now become established as the standard for digital editions. The xml format makes it possible to save and edit even complex structured texts independently of specialised software; in addition to the actual text, its structure levels, annotations and references can also be stored in a universally readable format.
The second central question that arises with regard to digital editions is their long-term availability. In order for them to be reliably preserved and used for further research, they need to be archived on servers that continue to operate. Institutional repositories such as the publication server of the University of Regensburg offer the best requirements for this.
UR Publishing Services offers researchers at the University of Regensburg comprehensive support in the creation of digital editions. We work with you to develop a concept for your digital edition, familiarise you and your project team with text markup according to TEI guidelines in customized training courses and take care of the publication of your edition on the University of Regensburg's publication server. On request, we can also produce a high-quality print edition, available in bookshops.
