Editions

With the tools of the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) and the publication server of the University of Regensburg, we provide you with a professional infrastructure for scientific editions.

Creating editions with UR Publishing Services

Digital technologies have significantly expanded the possibilities of scholarly editing. However, given that software is constantly evolving, the question arises as to how texts – which are often enriched in a variety of ways – can remain accessible in the long term. In response to this, the Text Encoding Initiative (external link, opens in a new window) (TEI) has developed guidelines for text markup that ensure long-term availability and interoperability:

  • All data (not only the edited text itself, but also metadata such as information on its structure and layout) is stored in text form.
  • The use of the XML markup language makes it possible to record this data in a clearly structured manner (i.e. with text and metadata kept separate from one another).
  • The use of the TEI document format, which is now established as the standard for digital editions, ensures that the stored data is universally comprehensible.

Text markup in accordance with TEI guidelines not only complies with good scholarly practice but is also listed by the German Research Foundation (DFG) as a funding criterion for editorial projects.

UR Publishing Services offer researchers at the University of Regensburg comprehensive support in producing editions that meet these requirements:

  • Together with you, we develop a concept for your digital edition, familiarise you with appropriate tools for your project and, if required, introduce you and your team to text marking-up in accordance with TEI guidelines through bespoke training sessions.
  • From your TEI document, we generate an attractively formatted and intuitive digital edition and, on request, also produce a high-quality print edition that is available in bookshops. Our publication server ensures the reliable archiving of your data.
