Departure Formalities at the End of your Studies

Below you will find an overview of important formalities that you should definitely complete before departure.
Departure formalities
Deregistration of residence with the city of Regensburg
A few days before you leave Regensburg, you must deregister your residence with the City of Regensburg.
You can find the "Deregistration of residence" form in the City of Regensburg's form centre in the "Registration matters" section (external link, opens in a new window).
Please go in person to the Bürgerbüro Stadtmitte (for EU citizens) or the Ausländerbehörde (for non-EU citizens) to deregister your address and receive a confirmation of deregistration.
Deregistration from the broadcasting licence fee
You should only deregister from the broadcasting licence fee once you have deregistered your place of residence with the city of Regensburg, as you must upload the city's deregistration confirmation as proof in the online deregistration form. Please make absolutely sure that you have settled all outstanding payments before you leave.

Closure of the German bank account
If you have opened an account with a local bank in Regensburg, you must close the account before departure at a personal appointment at one of the bank branches. Please make sure that your account is not in the red and that you have settled all outstanding payments.
Accounts with online banks can usually be closed from abroad online or by email, but please check the terms and conditions with your bank.
Departure formalities
Cancellation of health insurance membership
If you have taken out statutory or private health insurance in Germany, you must cancel this in good time before departure (usually at least 2 weeks before departure). Please contact your insurance company directly and observe the information and deadlines in your insurance contract. An application for exmatriculation is often required for cancellation.
If you have come to Germany with an EHIC from your home country and have not taken out separate insurance in Germany, you do not need to cancel your membership.
Collecting your degree certificate
Before you leave, please contact the relevant examination office to find out whether your degree certificate can also be sent abroad by post or whether it can only be sent to German addresses or collected in person.
You must also inform the Foreigners' Registration Office of the end of your studies within two weeks of receiving your degree certificate, especially if you have a residence permit for study purposes (§16b).
Cancellation of the Deutschlandticket
If you have subscribed to the Deutschlandticket for students, please do not forget to cancel it by the 10th of the month of departure. Please also make sure that you have settled all payments for the Deutschlandticket.
Have you completed a double degree programme?
If you complete a double degree programme, i.e. receive a degree from two universities, there may be additional points that you need to consider. These include, among others:
- Transcript of Records: Please download a transcript of records yourself in FlexNow, this is your transcript of records.
- Confirmation of departure: Often your home university, especially if you receive ERASMUS+ funding, requires confirmation of your departure date.
Please contact your degree program coordinator and ask what formalities you need to comply with.
Are you staying in Regensburg or Germany?
In this case, you must inform the Foreigners' Registration Office about the end of your studies. If you have not yet found a job and want to stay in Regensburg or Germany to look for work, you can apply for a change of residence permit to a job seeking permit (for a period of 12-18 months). Please do this before your current residence permit for your studies expires and inform the Foreigners' Registration Office immediately after receiving your certificate that you have completed your studies.
If you remain in your current residence, you do not have to deregister your residence. If you move within Regensburg or Germany, you must re-register your new address with the relevant authority within two weeks of moving in.
In this case, you do not have to deregister from the licence fee.
