Books

We publish your research results in book form – digitally and, if desired, in print. As a library, we also aim to make the cultural output of university research and teaching visible and preserve it for the long term. Our portfolio therefore ranges from dissertations and conference proceedings to exhibition catalogues and literary texts.

Publishing books with UR Publishing Services

Services

  • We enable you to publish your book digitally in the Open Access model, as recommended in the Open Access Policy of the University of Regensburg: Your research results can be found worldwide, are freely accessible and can be reused indicating your authorship, whereby you retain all rights to them thanks to the use of science-friendly Creative Commons licences. The provision on the publication server of the University of Regensburg also ensures professional metadata management and permanent archiving.
  • On request, we also produce a print edition of your publication, which will be available in bookshops: we assign an ISBN, have high-quality print copies produced and take care of the delivery of deposit copies to the German National Library and the Bavarian State Library, and in the case of dissertations also to the faculty. As we work with print on demand, no minimum print run is required and additional copies can be reprinted at any time.
  • Our cover design makes your book instantly recognisable as a publication of the University of Regensburg: the semi-circle in faculty colour indicates the sphere in the centre of the campus and at the same time refers to the subject affiliation. We design the background to match the theme of your publication. We provide you with guidelines and templates for a professional layout; if required, we also offer individual training and practical support. You can find detailed information on this on our page on layout for research publications.
  • As a member of the AG Universitätsverlage, UR Publishing Services is committed not only to the idea of Open Access, but also to quality assurance in accordance with academic standards. As a science-supporting institution of the University of Regensburg, we are also not in competition with commercial scientific publishers, so that we can offer publication services at a favourable price.

Conditions

  • The UR Publishing Services are an offer of the University Library for members of the University of Regensburg. They can be used by both staff and students, provided that the other conditions are met.
  • A written recommendation from an institution of the University of Regensburg must be submitted for each publication project. This recommendation can be issued by a chair or a research centre, for example; in the case of dissertations, the approval of the supervisor is required (unfortunately we cannot publish cumulative dissertations); in the case of contributions to series, the approval of the series editor is required.
  • Publications via UR Publishing Services are always published in the Open Access model. In order to ensure worldwide and permanent free availability, a digital version of the publication is made available on the publication server of the University of Regensburg.
  • A total of six deposit copies of each printed publication must be submitted, two each to the Bavarian State Library, two to the German National Library and two to the University Library; in the case of dissertations, the deposit copies for the faculty specified in the doctoral regulations must also be submitted. The costs for these deposit copies must be borne by the publishers or their institution.

Procedure

  1. You submit a publication request in which you provide us with the key data of your planned publication and receive a cost estimate. The expected total costs are made up of a publication fee of €65 and the printing costs for mandatory and personal copies, which vary depending on the number, scope and layout.
  2. You conclude a publication contract with us and create an entry for your publication on the publication server. The publication contract sets out, among other things, the desired print run, the final costs and the licence conditions; your publication recommendation is also part of this contract. You can refer to our instructions for entering your publication on the publication server. As soon as you sign the publication contract and submit your entry on the publication server, we can generate an ISBN and a DOI for your publication.
  3. You format your manuscript, we create the cover and have a test print produced. For a professional appearance of your manuscript, you should ideally follow our tips on layout for research publications. In particular, a barrier-free design is not only required by law for scientific publications, but also increases the visibility and accessibility of your research results. The imprint provided by us must be inserted between the cover page and the foreword or table of contents on the left-hand side. You send us the fully formatted manuscript as a PDF file. In the meantime, we will design your book cover in the corporate design of the University of Regensburg. If desired, we will integrate a blurb of a maximum of 1,000 characters including spaces and a background image with a resolution of at least 300 dpi. Please clarify the image rights for this and add a corresponding source reference in the imprint. As soon as we receive your formatted manuscript, we will order a sample copy of your book from our printers, which we will send to you for review and possible corrections.
  4. Once you have finalised your publication, the last step is to upload it to the publication server and give us your approval. The digital version will be available online immediately after approval. You will also receive the agreed number of copies within six weeks. We take care of the distribution of the printed version and the delivery of your deposit copies. In case of dissertations, you will receive your doctoral certificate within two weeks of submitting the deposit copies.
