Europe / EU
The University of Regensburg can provide monthly EU grants for internships done in Europe (Erasmus+ programme countries).
Jan von Allwörden / DAAD Erasmus+ internship funding
Advantages of an Erasmus+ internship funding
- Funding for additional costs incurred abroad
- Support during the internship
- Learning Agreement for internships with regulation of academic recognition
- Additional funding for students with disabilities or chronic illnesses, for students with child(ren); more information on our services can be found here.
- Tips for preparation: On GRIPS you will find numerous testimonials from UR students who have completed an Erasmus+ internship. They contain helpful information on finding an internship, accommodation, etc.

Prerequisites for Erasmus+ funding
- Self-organised internship in an EU member state or a third country associated with the Erasmus+ programme. You can find some offers and tips for your search in the Internship Search section and in the reports of former interns in the GRIPS section of the International Office).
- Full-time internship lasting at least 2 months (60 days); can also be completed more than once
- No tuition fees are charged at the host institution
- For students: Enrolment at the UR during the entire internship
- For graduates: funding possible for up to 12 months after the issue of the degree certificate (participants must still be enrolled at the time of application, exmatriculated at the start of the internship)
Not eligible for funding are internships at:
- EU institutions and EU bodies, including specialised agencies (see detailed list)
- Institutions and organisations that administer EU programmes
Pro rata funding in case of remuneration and other scholarships:
If you receive other funding (remuneration, scholarships) for your internship within the EU or associated countries that exceeds € 550 per month, Erasmus+ internship funding can only be granted on a pro rata basis.
As of project 2023, only 60 days can be funded in this case due to a shortage of funds. However, the internship can last longer.
Internships in the UK / Information on Brexit
Internships in the UK outside of universities can only be carried out if the host institution is authorised to issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS), which is a requirement for a visa application. This is not usually the case for schools or smaller companies.
Exception:
If you plan to do a (laboratory) internship at a British university, this will still be possible without a visa under the following requirements:
- You have EU citizenship.
- The internship lasts a maximum of 6 months.
In this case, the British university can admit you as a student and you can use the visa-free Standard Visitor Route to enter the country.
Whether Erasmus+ funding for internships is possible depends on whether the British university (your laboratory) is willing to sign an Erasmus+ Learning Agreement for Traineeships.
Erasmus+ internships outside the EU?
It is not possible to apply for the Erasmus+ internship worldwide funding programme at the UR until further notice, as there are insufficient funds available.
Exceptions are possible for the UK in individual cases (see tab Internships in the UK / Information on Brexit).
Visa
EU citizens do not need a visa for an internship within the EU member states or a third country associated with the Erasmus+ programme.
UR students who are third-country nationals can find detailed information on the residence regulations of the respective country on the websites of the relevant consulates and embassies. Please enquire in advance!
Please note: The residence permit in Germany expires if you stay abroad for more than 6 months without interruption . In this case, you must apply for an extension at the immigration office of the City of Regensburg. It is essential that your residence permit in Germany is valid until your return to Germany.
Partner institutions and quality criteria
Host institutions can be companies, vocational training institutions, research centres, etc. Internships at universities can generally only be funded if there is no bilateral agreement for Erasmus+ studies through which the stay can be arranged.
Funding rates for internships
Current Erasmus+ grants for UR Outgoings (internships)
The monthly funding rates are based on the different costs of living in the destination countries. These are adjusted annually.

Additional financial support
Top-up allowance for participants with fewer opportunities
Students and graduates
- with a disability (degree of disability of at least 20, GdB 20),
- with a chronic illness (with additional financial needs abroad),
- with child(ren)
- who are first-time graduates
- who finance significant parts of their studies through work (only academic year 2025/26)
can receive a grant of €250 per month for the additional costs incurred during an internship abroad - in addition to the regular scholarship rate.
This additional grant can only be awarded once, even if several of the above criteria apply to you. It can be combined with the top-up amount for sustainable travelling.
Real cost application
Students with a disability or chronic illness, as well as students with child(ren) who face particularly high additional costs for their stay abroad, may instead apply for reimbursement of actual expenses (real costs application) if they do so several months in advance. In this way, up to €15,000 per semester can be covered. A grant for a preparatory trip to explore the local conditions is also possible.
This requires ample lead time, so we ask students to seek advice well in advance.
Grant for "green travel"
If you are travelling both ways (outward and return journey) by sustainable means of transport (e.g. train, long-distance bus, bicycle), you can apply for up to a maximum of 6 additional travel days if they are necessary to reach your destination. The travel days on which you have travelled sustainably count as additional days of stay and are financially supported with the applicable daily rate of the corresponding country rate.
You will also receive a higher travel allowance (which was introduced for Project 2025) if you choose an environmentally friendly means of transport for your outward and return journey.
After you have submitted your application documents for Erasmus+ internship funding, the International Office will send you the necessary forms for additional funding by e-mail in due course.

Application procedure
You can apply for Erasmus+ internship funding at the International Office on an ongoing basis. Before applying, please check whether funding is still available for a destination country outside the EU.
All application documents (including the Learning Agreement for Traineeships) must be submitted in full at least 10 weeks before the start of the internship. Please note, however, that compiling the documents for an application takes time and the traineeship institution must also provide information. You should therefore start in good time!
Please send the complete application documents by e-mail to Margit Früchtl.
Internships that have already begun cannot be funded.
Application documents
Please send the following application documents by e-mail to Margit Früchtl:
- PDF of the online application in the MoveON application portal
- Curriculum vitae
- Certificate of enrollment (for the full duration of the internship)
- List of previous academic achievements (transcript) or list of grades (Flexnow printout), see Erasmus+ study abroad application documents
- Proof of eligibility for recognition
- Insurance declaration and copies of insurance policies (health, accident and liability insurance)
For an Erasmus+ internship, not only international health insurance, but also accident insurance and liability insurance are mandatory.
If you do not already have the appropriate insurance coverage, please contact insurance providers to learn more about purchasing the above-mentioned insurance policies. If you have any questions about mandatory insurance, please contact Margit Früchtl at the IO.
Insurance via the DAAD
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers combined health, accident and personal liability insurance for students who are funded by the DAAD (e.g. as part of Erasmus+).
DAAD: Insurance abroad (external link, opens in a new window)

Proficiency in the working language is a requirement for success in an internship. You will receive instructions with information on Online Language Support (OLS) via the EU Academy from the International Office after your application documents have been received. - Grant Agreement (will be prepared by the International Office after receipt and review of all application documents and sent directly to the participants)
Notes on the LA for Traineeships
The Learning Agreement for Traineeships will be checked by the UR International Office for completeness and correctness of the insurance details before it is signed.
Please send the draft to Margit Früchtl.
The LA will be signed by the Erasmus+ Coordinator for the University of Regensburg once all the necessary documents and supporting evidence have been submitted.
During the internship
- Mid-term report (cover sheet): every participant is required to hand in a mid-term report
- Changes to original Learning Agreement, if applicable
If changes to your Learning Agreement become necessary during your Erasmus+ internship, please contact Margit Früchtl at the IO directly.
Final documents for the internship
The final documents must be submitted to the International Office of the UR no later than 1 month after the end of the internship:
- Confirmation of stay
- Traineeship Certificate (internship certificate)
- Final report for the UR
- EU online survey (will be sent to you by the EU directly after the end of the internship)
